NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

About NSS

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary program under which young students from colleges, universities and +2 level work towards creating a campus community linkage. Popular as NSS, this program is conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. NSS helps the student to grow individually and also as a group. Volunteering for various tasks under NSS activities allows students to become confident, develop leadership skills and learn about different people from different walks of life.

The college has a Unit of National Service Scheme (NSS) affiliated with the Department of National Service Scheme, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. The NSS unit was established in 1994. The NSS Unit has 200 NSS Volunteers. The Unit has three Program Officers viz. a chief Program Officer and an Assistant Program Officer to execute the activities of NSS in an effective manner. There is also a female Program Officer who is also a Women’s Representative. The Unit is run under the guidance of the principal of the college. The Unit is inspired by the Motto of the National Service Scheme i.e. Not Me, But You. The Unit has its own Calendar of Activities prescribed by the Affiliating University. The activities prescribed in the Calendar are social activities specially focused to reach out to society. These activities include the celebration of various National /International days, cleanliness campaigns, environmental awareness projects, and orientation of the society through NSS Volunteers. The NSS Unit of the college conducts all the activities prescribed in the Activity Calendar.

Apart from the prescribed calendar, the NSS Unit also conducts a few activities like Blood Donation Camp and Tree- Plantation drives on the occasion the Birthday of the Coordinator, MGV Dr. Apoorva Hiray. The unit conducts health awareness programs like HIV / AIDS awareness program. During COVID 19 Pandemic the volunteers participated in a Vaccination awareness drive and distributed masks. Every year the Unit adopts a neighborhood village and conducts welfare activities in that village. The students participating in NSS Unit are called as NSS Volunteers as they are inspired by the concept of Dignity of Labor. After the completion of Two-Years of NSS -Service the volunteers get the certificate of participation. As per the provision of affiliating University under Ordinance 163, the volunteers are eligible for grades for their contribution to social service.

Objectives of National Service Scheme:

  • To run the National Service Scheme Unit efficiently.
  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and also involve them in problem solving.
  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  • To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
  • To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.
  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
  • To practice national integration and social harmony.
  • To inculcate patriotism among volunteers.
  • To motivate students to do community service in them.

Motto:

The Motto of NSS “Not Me but You, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the student’s development & appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a good doctrine in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

NSS Logo:

The logo for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The Red & Blue colors contained in the logo motivate the NSS Volunteers to be active & energetic for the nation-building social activities. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, the wheel thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

National Service Scheme Functions:

  •  At the beginning of academic year National service scheme volunteer registration will be complete.
  •  As per the circulars of Savitribai Phule Pune University and Maharashtra Government National Service Scheme department arrange programmes
  •  Implementing schemes of Maharashtra Government as well as Savitribai Phule Pune University.
  •  Convincing the volunteers about the importance of National Service Scheme.
  •  NSS department create social awareness on female feticide, organ donation, AIDS, Adult education, water conservation, tree plantation etc.
  •  NSS department adopt underdeveloped village. And bring social and cultural development in adopted village.
  •  Tree plantation and conservation program carried out by NSS department.
  •  Street plays, rallies and poster presentations conducted by NSS department on AIDS awareness, Cleanliness campaign etc.
  •  Conducting special winter camps at adopted village.
  •  Proper utilization of funds received from Savitribai Phule Pune University.
  •  Filling of ordinance 163 form by volunteer and distribution of certificate.
